Holiday Home Tour Lawrence Ks

Retired coach and teacher Lew Llewellyn owns the home built in 1923 in Lawrence by basketball inventor James Naismith and his oldest son. Llewellyn is decorating the home and will be opening its doors to the public during the 12th Annual Holiday Homes Tour, a fundraiser for Health Care Access in Lawrence.

LAWRENCE — Two traditions — basketball and holiday decorating — will come together in early December when a two-story house built by basketball inventor James Naismith and his oldest son in 1923 joins five other decorated homes on the 12th Annual Holiday Homes Tour in Lawrence.

Lew Llewellyn, a retired coach and teacher who worked 27 years at Haskell Indian Junior College/post-high school (now Haskell Indian Nations University), purchased the Naismith home at 1700 Mississippi St. in August 1965. This is the first year he's opened its doors to the public during the Holiday Homes Tour.

"We'll be opening up the whole house," said Amy Wilson, Llewellyn's daughter and a member of the Holiday Homes Tour committee.

The Holiday Homes Tour, a fundraiser for Health Care Access, will be from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 4. Tickets are $20; only 500 tickets will be sold.

In addition, the Holiday Shoppe and Bake Sale, featuring repurposed holiday items and a basket raffle, will be open beginning at noon Dec. 4 at the Smith Center at Brandon Woods, 4730 Brandon Woods Terrace. There is no admission charge for the shoppe/bake sale.

Llewellyn, the third owner of the Naismith house, said he's made only a few changes to the original structure. A small garage was razed and replaced with a new garage and breezeway. The kitchen and a bathroom were remodeled, and wallpaper was replaced. The original wooden floors were restored. The original windows and frames remain intact.

"I tell people, sometimes late at night, I hear the basketball bouncing in the attic," he said with a smile.

The former Naismith home will be adorned with traditional Christmas decorations for the tour: Stockings will hang from the fireplace mantel; wreaths will be placed in windows. Creches collected by Llewellyn's late wife, Lois, will be displayed. A Christmas tree, as well as doors and chandeliers, will be decorated, too.

The other homes on the tour, and their owners, are:

1318 Kanza Drive, a recently constructed home, Sarah Dreiling and Dustin Herron.

209 Providence Road, a two-story, ranch-style house built in the 1960s, Beth and Marshall Kelley.

5229 Brown Lane, a recently constructed home, Jennifer and Derek Stucker.

1733 Brandon Woods Drive, featuring a nautical theme, Margie Steil.

646 Rhode Island St., a Queen Anne/Victorian-style home built in 1913, Summer and Nate Wedermyer.

"Given the popularity of KU basketball in Lawrence, I think the former Naismith home on Mississippi Street will be a big draw for this year's tour," said Kris Marsh, Holiday Homes Tour chairwoman. "With our mix of historic and new homes, I think tickets may sell out early."

Health Care Access is a nonprofit safety net clinic serving those who are uninsured or having difficulty affording health care in Douglas County.

"In a year, we serve 2,000 different individuals," said Health Care Access CEO Beth Llewellyn, also a daughter of Lew Llewellyn. "Excluding (University of Kansas) students, we know there are about 10,000 people uninsured (in Douglas County)."

She said she'd like to see the tour raise $20,000, all of which would go toward the clinic's operation.

Tickets are available at Hy-Vee locations in Lawrence; from 9 to 11 a.m. at Health Care Access' administrative office, 2518 Ridge Court; and healthcareaccess.org/holidayhomestour. Tickets can be purchased the day of the tour at the Smith Center. For more information, call (785) 856-1672.
